Rebuilding a Local Treasure: The Story Behind the Scott Munn Bridge

Before & After

If you’ve ever strolled through Eaton Rapids, you’ve probably crossed the Scott Munn Bridge. Named after W. Scott Munn, a local historian who chronicled the town’s past, the bridge had fallen into disrepair over the years.

It’s one of those places that quietly weaves itself into daily life, connecting parks and offering some of the best fall views in town. When it became clear the bridge needed serious repair, Visionary Builders stepped in to help bring it back to life.

A Vital Link in the Community

The Scott Munn Bridge serves as a crucial connector for the Eaton Rapids community, linking the downtown area with the city's parks. It’s especially important during local events, offering a convenient shortcut for walkers. Spanning the Gran River, the bridge connects the Hall Street City parking lot with the Playground of Dreams, making it a key pathway for locals and visitors alike.

Surrounded by stunning landscaping, the bridge is particularly picturesque in the summer when the trees are full and green, and again in the fall with vibrant orange and red colors.

Honoring Local History

The bridge was named in honor of W. Scott Munn, the author of The Only Eaton Rapids on Earth: The Pioneer History of Eaton Rapids and Hamlin Townships with Reminiscences. This dedication recognizes Munn’s invaluable contributions to documenting the area’s history and preserving the stories of past generations.

A Bridge in Need of Renovation

While the Scott Munn Bridge holds great sentimental value, it had become increasingly unsafe and unattractive over the years. The walking boards had holes, and even small plants were growing between the boards. The paint was peeling and showing serious signs of aging. Local residents had been voicing their concerns for some time, with frequent appeals posted on local Facebook groups calling for repairs.

After years of requests, the city finally took action. With funding from the Eaton County Community Parks Grant Program, Eaton Rapids was able to move forward with the renovation.

The city manager reached out to Visionary Builders to submit a bid for the project, with the goal of completing the work before the local Airstream show, Urban Air®. As a company deeply rooted in the community, we were honored to be selected to restore the bridge.

Breathing New Life into the Bridge

The renovation began with essential repairs to the bridge's core structure. Local welders reinforced the metal frame to ensure stability and safety. Once the foundational repairs were complete, Visionary Builders took over construction.

We prepped and repainted the metal structure, giving it a fresh, durable finish. We then recladded the bridge with new handrails and deck boards. For the walking deck, we sourced high-quality lumber from Lou’s Cutting Edge Tree Service, one of our local partners.

Community Impact

The bridge was completed in September 2025. The result? A bridge that’s not only safe and functional but also visually appealing. Ain’t she purdy?

At Visionary Builders, we prioritize partnerships that strengthen our local community. Serving our neighbors is something we take great pride in, and it was a privilege to contribute to this project. We were thrilled to see the Eaton Rapids Chamber of Commerce recognize the completion of the renovation and celebrate it as a job well done.

For us, this project is a testament to the heart of the Eaton Rapids community and building connections that will last for generations to come.

We hope this project inspires others in the community to appreciate the “little things” that make Eaton Rapids special, like caring for our neighbors, maintaining our local landmarks, and honoring the history that binds us all together. It’s work like this that makes our jobs truly rewarding.
